While it is impossible to boil down the best day and time to purchase a new vehicle, the month of November, and late autumn, is often one of the best times of year to buy a new car, truck, SUV or minivan. Dealerships are looking to fill their lots with next year’s models and have sales quotas to reach before the end of the year.
While many of us today begin the buying process online, surfing through the internet and social media, Tom Hesseltine, Co-President of Upstate Auto, in Saranac Lake, New York says, “Nothing beats coming in and test-driving and making sure the vehicle is comfortable, rides nice and discover what the final deal is.”
He adds, “When it comes time to select a new vehicle, the internet has made it really nice because a person can, from their own living room, research vehicles. They can pick out what they need and get pricing, so when they come into the dealership, they have an idea as to what they are looking for and what the price should be.”
In today’s market, there are so many makes and models to choose from, that it can be somewhat overwhelming. Before visiting the dealership, buyers should determine how they are going to be using the vehicle, how many miles they drive and consider whether it is going to be for family or work.
“Each individual chooses a car based on their needs,” Tom claims. “There are trucks, for those who need them for work; and SUVs and minivans for families with three or more kids.”
All that said in northern New York, four-wheel drive, such as SUVs, remain the popular choice. That is due in large part to the region’s rugged roads and long winters.
According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price for the best mid-size SUV can start at around $33,000.00, while the full-size truck begins at $38,000.00, so customers need to consider their budget.
Tom points out that people should have a budget in mind and consider how long they plan on keeping their new vehicle. In many cases it makes more financial sense to keep a new car or truck for three years, maybe longer.
The last thing a new car owner wants to do is turn around and trade in in a year because the vehicle does not fit their needs or budget.
Another important step before purchasing a new car or truck is researching insurance, premiums and other associated costs.
The Insurance Information Institute says that the cost of your car can be a factor in the cost of insuring it.
Some cars are cheaper to insure than others. Car insurance companies prefer to insure safe vehicles, as they are less likely to lead to expensive claims. That means, a car with high safety ratings can get you a bit of a discount.
“The price of the vehicle can increase the cost of your insurance,” remarks Blue Line Insurance Agency Owner/President Kelly Gonyo. “With that said, if you buy a vehicle with a lot of safety features it might actually be less expensive based on technology, alone.”
Keep in mind too that not all insurance agencies will offer you the same rate and service. So, it is just as important to “shop around” and compare agencies and rates.
While many new car owners may lean towards working with the big name, corporate agency, that may not be the best approach. Often, the local, independent agency should be your first call.
An independent agency, to include the Blue Line Insurance Agency, sells insurance policies provided by several different insurance carriers, rather than just a single insurance company. Therefore, they have the ability to research prices and coverages with several different insurance companies. Since rates vary widely, an independent agency can very likely find better and less expensive coverage for your new vehicle.
